McLaren Trophy America, in collaboration with SRO, is thrilled to unveil an exciting update to its driver categories with the official debut of the Papaya Cup - set to launch during Rounds 5 and 6 of the championship at Virginia International Raceway on the 17th & 18th July.
The spirit of the Papaya Cup is to recognise the achievements of Pro-AM and AM drivers over a certain age or with limited race experience. The Championship Organising Committee will accept a driver into the Papaya Cup category based on several conditions such as: An AM driver who is 60 years or older, An AM driver, younger than 60 years, based on their previous levels of experience, or An AM driver, younger than 60 years, based on their previous levels of performance.
Drivers that are admitted to the Papaya Cup will continue to compete for the overall positions and podiums within their categories, however a Papaya Cup Pro-AM and AM podium will also be held. Those drivers will receive specially commissioned Papaya Cup medals.
At the end of the season, the top Papaya Cup Pro-AM and AM drivers will be recognised at the McLaren Trophy championship awards on Saturday 15 November at the McLaren Technology Center.
The McLaren Motorsport team is confident that this new driver category will add a new dimension of competition to the McLaren Trophy America, ensuring that thrilling racing among all drivers remains a cornerstone of our new series.
